Expressing my inner soul

Since I learned it at school, I’ve always enjoyed writing. And even before learning it, I’d already developed my method of expressing what was going on in my lil’ soul through drawing. Even at this early age, my drawings already contained some “poetry”, as I’d draw many small details that other children my age simply wouldn’t even think about! To this day, I still admire my own drawings of yesteryear, as I kept quite a few.

My most precious gift

When I started learning how to “draw letters” and form words with such “drawings”, a new world was opened right before my eyes, and I began prioritizing that form of expression over drawing. Every person has a gift, and one of my greatest gifts has always been the ease I have regarding writing, as if, when I use text to express the thoughts of my heart, to storytell, or to teach something, some “entity” takes control over my soul and provides me with all the needed inspiration to write, in such a way that, upon reading the final result, I often ask myself: “Did this text really come from me?” You may not say this is the case after reading these lines, but that’s perfectly normal. When I talk about my comfort and easiness with writing, I’m specifically referring to when I write in my native language (Portuguese). I believe you perfectly understand that everyone feels much more at ease when expressing themselves in their mother tongue, not to mention that some of that expression may get lost with translation.

My writing ventures

The kid who wrote a book

Speaking of “being impressed with myself”, I also wrote a book when I was only 11. But not any kind of book, it was a gamebook based on the Fighting Fantasy role-playing gamebook franchise, very popular in the ’80s before video games took over. The book is called The Caves of Evil, and the plot revolves around a hero trying to save a princess from the dungeons inside some caves. The plot may seem simplistic (and no, it wasn’t based on Super Mario, as I didn’t know at the time who “Super Mario” even was), but I was able to accomplish a great level of complexity with the game, with things matching and making sense in terms of its progression. To this day, I still ask myself how I could write such an elaborate work at that young age, but the truth is that I did. In 2015, I even published it – both in Portuguese and English – on a personal blog I ran at the time (very similar to this website) in a format where, instead of “turning the page” to choose the paragraph with the intended choice (the way it was done with the physical books), it was even more efficient: you’d click on the number with that option and advance to the respective webpage. If in the future I notice there’s enough interest, I might republish it here in a similar format…

The boy who wrote for several blogs

Furthermore, I’ve always enjoyed writing online content. Since I connected to the Internet for the first time in 1999, I got almost immediately interested in learning how to build websites – via pure HTML at that time, before AI took over and started building sites in seconds – and spent lots of time writing content for the sites and blogs I’ve run ever since.

The man who wrote poetry

After decades of writing in prose, more recently (since 2019), I discovered I was also good at writing poetry (in Portuguese, that is). The funny part is that I’m not even a fan of reading poetry, nevertheless, I love writing it (under the “Homo Miserabilis” pseudonym, so you may imagine what genre of poetry I usually write)! I love the challenge of expressing myself with the “musicality” poetry can offer, and I always try to follow the rules of metrics and, even more importantly, rhymes. I don’t write poems when I just think about doing it, I write when I feel I shall, but that’s the only way to create true masterpieces. And I’m not the one claiming I can write masterpieces when I’m truly into it, it’s the few people to whom I’ve shown a few of my poems attesting that this is one of my greatest gifts in life…
